The creative practice of Jun Iwasaki, a Japanese artist based in The Hague, involves photography, text and bookmaking.
Iwasaki’s works, rich in psychological undertones and characterised by ambiguity, Iwasaki’s work explores personal conflict, self-questioning and impermanence.
Although his photographs feature everyday motifs, seemingly insignificant moments that occur in the gap between things, each image is presented in a way that resists easy assimilation. Consequently, Iwasaki’s photographic expression is often described as ‘poetry without words’.
The textual aspect of his practice—mainly the daily writings journal(The Study of Living in 2100)—plays a fundamental role in the construction of his work.
In terms of bookmaking, he has published 10 artist’s booksーincluding on-going series “A Song from the Laundry Room”ーexploring narrative approaches that the most of the medium of the book itself.
Through the weaving of highly personal narratives, Iwasaki’s oeuvre investigates questions about the social, political and anthropological issues we face.
Iwasaki’s book’To Find The Right Chair’ was published by Cairo Apartment in 2021. Iwasaki was nominated Japan Photo Award 2018, APA photo award 2022.
Solo exhibition at seikatsu (Tokyo, 2026), shinagawaya (Tokyo, 2025), nidi gallery (Tokyo,2022) and midoriSO gallery (Fukuoka, 2022), Group show at Yvon Lambert (Paris, 2025), LICHT gallery (Tokyo,2023). Iwasaki’s work has been exhibited at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan.
Jun Iwasaki is co-founder of Cairo Apartment, the Independent publishing house that publishes contemporary art books.
